Augusta County School Board votes to include documents with agenda in effort to be more transparent

VERONA — The Augusta County School Board will become a little more transparent following a motion to provide links to board documents along with the agenda every month. The motion was passed unanimously at the board’s meeting Thursday, Feb. 1.

The issue, and the motion, were brought to the board by its newest member, North River representative Sharon Griffin.

“I continued to be concerned about the spirit of the Freedom of Information Act,” said Griffin. “In the spirit of that act we ought to be giving citizens the board packet or board documents at the same time we release the agenda.”

Augusta County will join both Waynesboro and Staunton school boards in providing this information to the public along with the agenda.

Before being elected to the board this past November, Griffin would often attend meetings. She told the board on Thursday night that it would have been helpful to her, as she believes it would be to many who attend meetings, if documents were available online as the board discussed them.
