Shenandoah Valley Social Services appoints Sherry Bowman McClanahan as director

AUGUSTA COUNTY — Sherry Bowman McClanahan is the new director of Shenandoah Valley Social Services (SVSS).

Shenandoah Valley Social Services announced the appointment in a January press release. The program provides “human services” and “assistance to citizens experiencing financial hardship, neglect, and abuse” to residents of Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro. McClanahan is taking over after the departure of previous director Anita Harris, who retired after 36 years with SVSS.

“I look forward to leveraging my experience in building community partnerships to develop solutions that ensure the safety of children and adults,” McClanahan wrote. “Open communication and positive relationships in the community allow for mutual sharing of information, strengthening our collective ability to best serve residents in the Shenandoah Valley.”

According to the release, McClanahan is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with “clinical and psychiatric emergency services experience in private practice and clinical and behavioral health hospital settings.” This includes her most recent position, Child Protective Services Supervisor with the Henrico County Department of Social Services. She specializes in trauma treatment.
