Schools will be closed Tuesday, making the second day this week that area flooding has forced students to stay home.
Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro schools all announced Monday evening that they would be closed Tuesday, Oct. 1.
“Local roads continue to be flooded and more rain is anticipated overnight,” Staunton City Schools said in an email. “Therefore, Staunton City Schools will be closed for students and staff tomorrow, October 1. Thank you.”
Augusta County and Waynesboro followed shortly after, both making the announcement on social media and in messages sent to families.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch caused by excessive rainfall until 11 p.m. Monday. The watch is for portions of central and western Virginia. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations, according to the National Weather Service. The alert said that creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.
