Financing for Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail renovation moves ahead despite lack of a finalized project plan

While the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail staff are still working to redefine the exact scope of its renovation after contractor bids came back millions of dollars over budget, Charlottesville City Council voted on financing for the project.

During the City Council meeting on Monday, June 16, the Council voted 3-2 to approve the financing and authorizing the ACRJ board to participate in a bond sale — one of the ways the renovation is planned to be financed — starting July 21.

While the vote puts the jail on track to sell the bonds this summer, some Councilors had concerns that the vote took place before knowing the final renovation plan…
