Sheriff’s office investigating drowning at Swift Run Campground

ELKTON, Va. (WHSV) – The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is investigating a drowning incident that happened Wednesday at Swift Run Campground.

The incident reportedly involved a 10-year-old girl drowning in the pool at the campground, located off Spotswood Trail in Elkton. Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson was not able to provide additional details.

VDH reports increase in drownings

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Thursday that six children under the age of 5 years old have died in swimming pool drownings in the commonwealth since Memorial Day, according to a Virginia Department of Health release. These six deaths surpass the number of fatalities for similar incidents among young children for each of the last three years — three in 2024, two in 2023 and four in 2022.

VDH reports that drowning is the leading cause of death in children between the ages of 1-4 years old. Among all ages, nearly 500 people accidentally drowned in Virginia between 2020 and 2024, and almost 20% were younger than 19 years old, according to the VDH release…
