Harrisonburg police searching for assault suspect after issuing shelter-in-place

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – The Harrisonburg Police Department is searching for a suspect involved in an assault that happened Wednesday on Chicago Avenue.

HPD issued a shelter-in-place at 4:15 p.m., and there is a heavy police presence in the 800, 900 and 1000 blocks of Chicago Avenue, where they are responding to reports of an assault. HPD has not reported that the shelter-in-place was lifted as of 4:45 p.m.

HPD is actively searching for the male suspect and working to identify him. Anyone who recognizes him or has information about his whereabouts is asked to call HPD at 540-434-4436 immediately. HPD said to not approach the suspect and call law enforcement instead.

HPD advised those who live in the area to stay inside and allow officers to work, and asked drivers in the area to use an alternate route of travel…
