Waynesboro couple shocked to find high radon levels in their home

WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) – A Waynesboro couple was shocked to learn they had dangerously high levels of radon in their home after using a radon test kit they got for Christmas.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Linda Lee said she and her husband tested their home for the gas in the spring, finding levels of radon much higher than the average indoor concentration of the gas in American homes, which the EPA reports is 1.3 pCi/L (picocuries per liter).

“My husband ran the test and we got very high numbers, dangerously high levels in the 30s,” Lee said. “We ran a test we bought from Amazon and we got 21.4 — still way too high.”…
