This Day in History: Unite the Right Rally turns deadly in Charlottesville

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WHSV) – Eight years ago on Aug. 12, 2017, the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville turned deadly when one woman died and many others were injured.

The formal rally was scheduled to start at noon, though demonstrators had started to gather in Charlottesville the night before. Marchers at the rally chanted phrases including “white lives matter” and “you will not replace us.”

Violence between rallygoers and counter protesters began on the morning of Aug. 12. Soon after, the city declared an unlawful assembly at Emancipation Park. The commonwealth’s governor at the time, Terry McCauliffe, declared a state of emergency shortly before noon. One man who spoke to WHSV in 2017 described the scene as a “war zone.”…
