UVA School of Medicine finds new way to treat sepsis

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Scientists at UVA and the University of Michigan say they’ve created a new antibody that could stop sepsis, a deadly infection that kills millions every year.

Right now, doctors can only treat sepsis symptoms, but this new antibody goes after the root cause: an out-of-control immune response. Testing in lab mice showed it protected organs and saved lives.

“It is huge win because you know the industry, every researcher, every pharmaceutical industry want to find the solution,” said Dr. Jianjie Ma, with UVA’s Department of Surgery and UVA Cancer Center. “This is the demand, there is no such therapy in the market now.”…
