HPD warning residents of scam calls

HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Harrisonburg Police Department is warning residents about a new phone scam that is making the rounds.

HPD says they have received multiple complaints about a phone scam where callers are impersonating law enforcement officers from HPD or the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office. Scammers are contacting residents, claiming they’ve missed jury duty or have an outstanding warrant, and are being told they must pay a fine immediately to avoid being arrested.

HPD reminds folks that they nor the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office will ever call you to demand payment, ask for gift cards, mobile app payments, or bank information over the phone. Officials also say they do not handle legal matters like jury duty over the phone or accept money to resolve them…
