CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – As part of a nationwide day of demonstration, Charlottesville and Albemarle County community members took to the streets on Monday evening in a show of support for workers and their families.
While some may view Labor Day as simply a long weekend, organizers and protestors say the holiday is about solidarity—standing up for better conditions and standing up for each other.
“I think there’s so much history that we just ignore,” said Shannon Gillikin, President of the Charlottesville Education Association and a teacher at Charlottesville City Schools. “[Many] of us are just brought up like, oh, a Labor Day cookout.
