Charlottesville Schools reducing number of SROs it plans to bring back next year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Charlottesville City Schools is making some changes to its plans to bring back armed School Resource Officers, or SROs, next school year.

As the school district continues to build its draft memorandum of understanding with Charlottesville Police Department, it will now recommend reinstating only two SROs, as opposed to its original plan to hire four. One would be stationed at Charlottesville High School, with the other at Charlottesville Middle School.

Charlottesville Schools says it will also specify how it will co-select and train the SROs, adding that Charlottesville Police Chief Michael Kochis has confirmed each SRO will receive additional training “in areas such as youth mental health, working with students who have special needs, and school routines.”…
