In Virginia, sheriffs are constitutional officers elected to four-year terms. They are responsible for their community’s law enforcement, jail administration, court security and civil processing. In the City of Charlottesville, the Sheriff provides security of the Charlottesville Circuit and General District Courts and provides mental patient transportation for the Charlottesville Police Department.
Incumbent Sheriff James Brown (D) is once again running for Charlottesville Sheriff unopposed. He first won the seat in 2009, and won unopposed in 2013, 2017, and 2021.
