UVA Health research targets addictive behaviors in the brain

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – New research out of UVA Health is looking toward focused ultrasounds as a treatment for addiction and substance-use disorders — utilizing ultrasound waves to target areas in the brain to reduce cravings and provide a new avenue to treat multi-dimensional addictive behaviors.

“We’re not just shutting the addiction switch off,” said Doctor James Mahoney, associate professor and clinical neuropsychologist with UVA Health and the UVA Center for Leading Edge Addiction Research (CLEAR). “What we’re doing is really making it so that these individuals have success with the standard of care, with behavioral treatment, with medication.”
