City Council to consider new property for a low-barrier shelter

Monday night, Charlottesville City Council will consider whether to purchase a property to be used as a low-barrier shelter for community members experiencing homelessness.

The 3.8-acre property includes a 27,000 square-foot brick building and is located in the city at 2000 Holiday Drive, behind the Days Inn and the Country Inn & Suites on Emmet St. N/Route 29. (View the real estate listing for the property here.)

The proposed purchase price is $6.2 million, and the money would come out of the Capital Improvement Plan Contingency Account, according to a policy briefing summary that accompanies the City Council meeting agenda…
