The University of Virginia is in the early stages of planning its new construction of Sycamore Hill on the land formerly home to the Federal Executive Institute. Louis Nelson, Professor of Architectural History and Vice Provost for Academic Outreach, says that Sycamore Hill will serve as an expansion of units and facilities for the ROTC program in 2026. Sycamore Hill will also host an additional occupant, yet to be disclosed. The site will feature a variety of facilities such as guest rooms, classrooms, dining areas, and conference rooms. Nelson adds that all who work with ROTC look forward to “the ways that these new facilities will help us continue to recruit students who are interested in developing as citizen leaders through service.” The University of Virginia sparks a new precedent of expansion as the acquisition of this property marks an astounding 14.5-acre property addition. The name of the new facility, Sycamore Hill, pays homage to the Sycamore trees scattered across the property. It is expected to be completed in 2026.
Along with the Sycamore Hill construction, the UVA Center for the Arts — approved by the Board of Visitors back in 2024 — is still a work in progress. The finished facility will include a 220,000 square foot center housing the Tessa and Richard Ader Performing Arts Center, the Fralin Museum of Art, the Kluge-Ruhe Gallery, and the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music. The location of this project is placed on the Emmett/Ivy Corridor directly across from the School of Data Science. The versatility of the building reflects the diversity of the programs within. University architect Alice Rauscher says, “While an important site for an important program, this building will also be part of an ensemble of buildings that are intended to create a collective sense of community, offering shared resources, and building on our tradition of buildings and mixed uses in a harmonious relationship with the landscape.”…
