Plaintiffs agree to drop lawsuit over Charlottesville zoning ordinance

Charlottesville City Council unanimously agreed at its meeting Monday to settle a lawsuit challenging a December 2023 zoning ordinance meant to provide more residential density to the city.

The parties agreed that as long as the city provides information to the Virginia Department of Transportation for a traffic study of the new plan, the plaintiffs will withdraw their lawsuit.

Charlottesville hasn’t had a zoning ordinance since June, when Charlottesville Circuit Court Judge Claude Worrell forced the city to throw out its new code because its lawyers missed a filing deadline. City Attorney John Maddux said he thinks the settlement will bring “stability and reassurance to our development community.”…
