UVA-led study to examine if incarceration stops crime or shifts it to prisons

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A University of Virginia law professor has earned significant funding to study whether incarceration reduces violent crime or simply shifts it behind prison walls.

Professor Megan Stevenson was awarded a $610,000 grant from Arnold Ventures, a public policy philanthropic organization, for the project.

“Our goal here is to return to the question of whether prison prevents crime via incapacitation, taking into account within-prison offenses as well as those occurring outside of prisons,” Stevenson said…
