October 28, 2025: Plans filed for 16 apartments on small lot near Scott Stadium

Today’s edition is sponsored by the Ragged Mountain Running and Walking Shop

Is there a work of fiction being written or published right now that will be remembered on October 28, 2324? Two hundred and ninety-nine years ago today Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift was published with the protagonist’s journey to Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa, and the land of the Houyhnhnms. Is there room for satire in this second quarter of the 21st century? Not necessarily in this edition of Charlottesville Community Engagement. I’m Sean Tubbs, looking for a map to strange lands.

In this edition:
  • Charlottesville’s densification continues with plans filed for 16 units to replace a small house near Scott Stadium

  • A divided Board of Architectural Review votes to approve the design of a fence and railing at property on the Downtown Mall

  • Elected officials who make transportation decisions learned more about potential projects that will go through the next round of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Smart Scale process

  • City Council agrees to ask VDOT for funding to help pay for a sidewalk in the Meadows neighborhood

First-shout out: Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards

A mission of the Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards is to educate people about forest health. One way they accomplish the task is to hold all kinds of events both virtual and in person.

For instance, on November 5, Charlottesville Area Tree Steward David Marrs will lead a fun and informative fall walk in the woods at the beautiful Ivy Creek Natural Area. He will begin with a conversation about the area’s trees and landscapes, exploring how they reflect both the cultural and natural history of the land. Along the way, he will discuss why certain trees grow where they do and share tips for identifying the most common species. David will also talk about the changes that trees go through during the Fall time period. This takes place at 10 a.m. and you can find out more info here.
