‘Jazz Parade for Democracy’ demonstration marches through downtown

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – The Downtown Mall was filled with marching and music Saturday afternoon as community members gathered for a “Jazz Parade for Democracy.”

Composers, musicians, singers, actors, and demonstrators used the parade to share their thoughts on the state of democracy — showcasing signs and music to share their message of frustration through three performance acts of mourning, revival and celebration.

“When you use art to send a message, it actually has more impact on people,” said Isabelle McMahon, event organizer for Jazz Parade for Democracy. “We really want people to realize what’s going on right now and what we stand to lose, but also that we have the power to act and get things to be better again.”…
