SNAP: a ‘program that is really serving households that are trying to keep food on the table’

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – As the government shutdown stretches on, millions of Americans are waiting for help from the government to afford groceries. That money has been stalled for November but is expected to partially be available for recipients of food stamps on Thursday, November 13.

A University of Virginia professor said stereotypes and concerns over people taking advantage of the system are as rampant as ever, as is the belief that lower-income people are not entitled to the same quality nutrition.

“This is a program that is really serving households that are trying to keep food on the table,” said Serena Hagerty, a professor at UVA’s Darden School of Business who studies social programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). “We often think of SNAP aid as going to adults, but in reality, the majority of the recipients end up being children.”…
