A group of professors is calling for UVA to rescind agreement with federal government

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A group of professors at the University of Virginia is calling for the school to rescind its agreement with the Department of Justice, arguing that it entails significant threats to academic freedom.

18 days after the agreement was made public, the UVA Chapter of the American Association of University Professors is calling on Interim President Paul Mahoney and Rector Rachel Sheridan to pull out of the deal or resign.

As the first public university to strike a deal with the Trump administration, UVA agreed that it would comply with a July guidance that prohibits discrimination in admissions and hiring if the federal government suspended investigations into diversity, equity, and inclusion on Grounds. According to the Justice Department, the feds will drop the investigations altogether if UVA “completes its planned reforms prohibiting DEI at the university,” though that language is not explicit in the text of the agreement…
