Sometimes the people who contribute the most to the daily life of a close community work quietly in the background without expecting recognition. This month, we feature a man who has grilled many thousands of hamburgers and hot dogs for local sports fans.
At 69, David Tidwell said he’s always worked for himself, but the truth is he spends a huge chunk of his time each week working for everybody else. Whether a sticky August night or a damp and dreary November evening, whenever it’s game time, Tidwell is at Western Albemarle High School, flipping burgers and turning hot dogs for the benefit of the school.
Laura Neu, who coordinates the volunteers for concessions, first brought Tidwell to the Gazette’s attention. “When we established the new Western Albemarle Athletics Association (WAAA) this summer to benefit all WAHS athletics programs and revamped concession operations, he generously rejoined our efforts,” she said. “His support of our organization, the time he gives to help out and his enthusiasm for WAHS athletics programs are so appreciated and invaluable.”…
