Charlottesville turns oyster shells into Chesapeake Bay restoration tool

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Charlottesville is turning trash into a tool to help the Chesapeake Bay.

The Rivanna Solid Waste Authority is reminding people and restaurants about its free oyster shell recycling program at the McIntire Recycling Center.

Instead of going to a landfill, used shells are sent back to the bay to help rebuild oyster reefs. That matters because the bay’s wild oyster population has dropped to just one to two percent of what it once was…
