Texas Tech Flips One of Virginia’s Top Transfer Portal Commitments

Virginia has been able to secure nearly 30 commitments from the transfer portal this offseason, but one of their top commitments is heading elsewhere.

Kent State transfer Edge Jamond Mathis committed to UVA recently, but he announced today that he is going to be heading to Texas Tech instead.

Mathis finished the season with six sacks for Kent State and was their highest-graded defensive player on PFF. He finished with an 85.3 overall grade in 453 snaps, including an 82.9 pass rushing grade. He would have likely had a big role with this team next season, but is going to be trying to help Texas Tech defend their Big 12 title and get back to the College Football Playoff.

The positions that Virginia has prioritized this cycle have been quarterback and the secondary. It would still be good for the Cavaliers to land some impact players at wide receiver, but they have also done a really good job of retaining important players on the offensive line and on defense…
