Carbon monoxide risk increases during winter storms, UVA poison expert warns

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – As snow and dangerously cold temperatures move across Central Virginia, health experts are warning about an often-overlooked danger inside the home: carbon monoxide.

“Carbon monoxide is a silent toxin. You can’t smell it. You can’t taste it,” said Dr. Christopher Holstege, director of the Blue Ridge Poison Center at UVA Health.

Dr. Holstege says winter storms and power outages frequently lead to an increase in carbon monoxide poisonings, especially when people turn to alternative ways to heat or cook indoors…
