Virginia State Police respond to more than 500 crashes amid winter weather

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – The combination of snow, sleet, and ice has certainly had an impact on the Commonwealth’s roads.

As of 4 p.m. on Monday afternoon, January 26, Virginia State Police have responded to 506 crashes, with 38 of those crashes resulting in injuries. Two of the crashes were fatal. One occurred in Fairfax County on Saturday evening, and police say weather is not being considered as a factor. The second occurred in Pittsylvania County on Sunday evening, when a vehicle lost control, overturned, and partially ejected and killed the passenger, a seven-year-old boy. Police say alcohol is being looked at as a factor in the second accident.

Matthew Demlein, a spokesperson with State Police, says they began counting these crashes at 8 a.m. on Saturday, and that not all of them are directly related to weather…
