UVA Health among first in nation using new technology to treat irregular heartbeats

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – UVA Health’s Heart and Vascular Center is among the first teams in the country using a new technology to treat certain irregular heartbeats.

Doctors are now using a procedure known as pulse field ablation to treat atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter, conditions that cause the heart to beat rapidly and irregularly. Experts say atrial fibrillation, often called AFib, affects about 10 million people in the United States. Cases are becoming more common as the population ages and wearable devices detect rhythm changes earlier.
