Albemarle awarded grant to support Southwood Sanitary Sewer Project

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) – Albemarle County was recently awarded a $2 million Community Development Block Grant to support the Southwood Sanitary Sewer Project, a part of the ongoing redevelopment effort led by Habitat for Humanity in the Southwood Mobile Home Park.

“One of the main reasons we undertook Southwood redevelopment without displacement was the existing nature of the sewer system at Southwood,” said Dan Rosensweig, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville. “Sadly, it was failing.”

The federal funds, awarded through the state, will support a temporary extension of public sewer facilities to mobile homes in Southwood, and create a permanent sewer system to serve the development area long—term. Those efforts work to address health concerns surrounding faulty septic systems without displacing families in the process…
