CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – On Wednesday morning, May 6, a judge for the Western District of Virginia heard arguments on motions to dismiss a federal racketeering lawsuit against former and current University of Virginia Health officials and other defendants.
That lawsuit accuses former UVA Health CEO Craig Kent and his associates of a “hostile takeover of a revered medical system by a cadre of individuals determined to maximize revenues and rankings,” and alleges fraudulent billing practices and falsification of medical records in violation of the Racketeering and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO Act.
Lawyers representing Kent and his associates have called the accusations outlined in the complaint “repeated misstatements of fact,” and, aiming to get the claims dropped, argued to Judge Norman K. Moon Wednesday that the plaintiffs have no standing under RICO…
