Spanberger signs bills to ban firearms at Virginia’s public colleges, universities

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) — Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) signed legislation at the University of Virginia (UVA) on Tuesday to protect students’ and faculty’s safety on public college and university campuses following a deadly 2022 shooting.

On Tuesday, May 12, it was announced in a press release that , during a ceremony, Spanberger signed Senate Bill 272 and House Bill 626, which require that only law en forcement officers, ROTC cadets and U.S. military personnel be allowed to carry firearms at public higher education institutions in Virginia.
