Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant opened with a single assignment: build the Passat. Fifteen years later, the Tennessee facility carries a much larger role inside Volkswagen’s U.S. operations, with more than 1.85 million vehicles assembled, $4.3 billion invested, and more than 4,000 team members connected to the plant.
The anniversary also puts a spotlight on how much Volkswagen’s Chattanooga story has changed since the plant’s May 2011 grand opening. What began as a one-model assembly operation has become Volkswagen’s sole U.S. assembly facility, the home of the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, and a center for workforce training, research partnerships, and sustainability programs in the region.
Chattanooga’s Growth Since 2011
Volkswagen Group of America’s Chattanooga Plant is celebrating 15 years since its grand opening in May 2011. The facility began by assembling the Volkswagen Passat and has since grown into what the company describes as a cornerstone of its North American strategy and a source of pride for the greater Chattanooga community.
