Vigil held to remember men killed in Bridgeport explosion, 25 years later

BRIDGEPORT, Ala (WHNT) — Residents of the town of Bridgeport gathered together Friday to remember four men who died after an explosion rocked the Jackson County town 25 years ago.

The explosion ripped through part of downtown Bridgeport on January 22, 1999. The blast killed four people and injured at least eight others.

Ted Cloud, and Bridgeport Utilities workers Gerrall Ingram and Charles “Bo” Kilgore were killed almost instantly as a result of the incident. Another man, Michael Peacock, died the next year after battling injuries received in the explosion.

Peacock’s family, including his daughter Leighann Peacock, were among those who came together to remember those who lost their lives in the explosion. She said she and other members of the community want to make sure the incident is never forgotten.

“We all wanted to come out and bring part of the community together, because we have children that go to school here in the community of Bridgeport that don’t even know what happened here that day, know nothing about it, and there’s four men whose names should never be forgotten,” Leighann Peacock said. “Nothing’s ever done to honor them. This day every year has just been forgotten.”
