The John Davis Recreation Center in Dalton is set for a major construction project. The goal is to update the facility and make it a key part of Dalton’s parks for the future. City Administrator Andrew Parker said the project will help the building adjust to future needs. The construction should be finished by late 2025.
Last year, the gym was torn down for the new construction. The building next to it, which has meeting rooms and offices, is still standing. The project will add a new gym with a basketball court and other features. The existing building will also be updated with new multi-use spaces.
New buildings will be added around the pool, including an entry building, locker facilities, and a storage building. Parker’s long-term goal is to make James Brown Park, where the rec center is located, a more complete community park. There are also plans to improve the park’s sidewalks and add more recreational options on the east side.
The project is moving quickly. The final plans, created by architect Gregg Sims, have been approved by city leaders and are being reviewed by permitting authorities. Felker Construction will manage the project and is expected to seek competitive bids in March. Construction should start in the spring.
