Two small earthquakes were recorded in Georgia during October, the lowest number of quakes in the state in several months. That’s according to data reported by the United States Geological Survey.
On Oct. 5, a magnitude 2.2 earthquake was recorded in Northwest Georgia near Ringgold, GA, at around 11 p.m. The quake was centered near Interstate 75, where the highway cuts through Taylor Ridge. Two local residents reported feeling the quake, according to the agency’s “Did You Feel It” reporting program. No damage was reported.
Then, on Oct. 16, another magnitude 2.2 quake occured in rural Lincoln County, approximately 6 miles southeast of Lincolnton, near Georgia Highway 220 and the shoreline of Strom Thurmond Lake. The USGS “Did You Feel It” reporting system recorded five contacts from local residents who felt the 2 p.m quake.
During 2024, Georgia has experienced a total of 17 earthquakes ranging in magnitudes from 2.0 to 2.5. Georgia’s strongest quakes in 2024 with 2.5 magnitudes occured on Sept. 3 near Tunnel Hill, GA, and on June 6 near Buford, GA, USGS data show.
