As classes resume, new rules about recess go into effect in Tennessee this school year

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn — As students in Hamilton County head back to school, a new state law is changing the way recess is structured for elementary students.

The law, which took effect on July 1st, mandates that students have 40 minutes of recess each day, compared to the previous requirement of 140 minutes per week.

The law specifies that recess should consist of unstructured outdoor play, with exceptions for dangerous weather conditions.
