‘Fake threats have very real consequences’: Shooting hoaxes still in safety discussion following tragedy

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – In the wake of a deadly school shooting in Minnesota this week, police say false reports of active shooters continue to be a serious problem.

Universities across the country have faced a wave of hoax calls in recent days, including reports at Villanova University, the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, and the University of South Carolina. While none of those incidents turned out to be real, they sparked lockdowns and widespread fear.

“These false reports are extremely disruptive and dangerous,” said Juliana McGrath, spokesperson for the Harrisonburg Police Department. “Just because there was no actual threat [and it] was just a hoax, fake threats have very real consequences”…
