Chattanooga councilman calls for temporary protections for families during SNAP pause

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn — Chattanooga City Councilman Ron Elliott announced two resolutions Tuesday aimed at helping residents while federal SNAP benefits remain paused amid the government shutdown.

One measure would pause city water shutoffs linked to unpaid sewer fees until federal SNAP funding resumes or the shutdown ends.

The second urges EPB to take all steps possible to protect customers, including temporary pauses on disconnections, expanded payment plans, flexible fee policies, and outreach to households at risk.
