Picking it up: Nonprofit and residents highlight Chattanooga’s litter problem

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Despite being named a National Park City, one problem keeps Chattanooga from being as beautiful as it can possibly be: litter.

Jimmy Urciuoli is the Executive Director of Green Steps, a non profit that advocates for litter cleanups in Chattanooga. He tells us he believes the city needs more litter enforcement, and that fines for littering are not enough to solve the problem.

“My thought isn’t to fine people for throwing out trash,’ said Urciuoli, “My thought is to, instead of fining people, make them come and clean it up.”

He also tells us the hotspots for litter across the city are interstate ramps and lower income neighborhoods…
