SODDY-DAISY, Tenn. — A controversial proposal to build an asphalt plant in Soddy-Daisy is no longer moving forward.
Soddy-Daisy City Manager Burt Johnson confirmed to our newsroom Monday morning that developer Jamie Thomas has withdrawn his application to rezone a portion of city property for the project.
Residents had been raising alarms for weeks. They filled commission meetings and told us they were worried about pollution, runoff into nearby Little Soddy Creek, and the impact of truck traffic on surrounding neighborhoods.
The rezoning request was scheduled for a vote at an upcoming city commission meeting. With the application now pulled, that vote will not happen.
Neighbors who opposed the plant told us earlier this month that they felt the area was already dealing with heavy industry and did not want another plant near homes and the creek.
We have reached out to Thomas to learn whether he plans to bring the project back in a different form or at a different site…
