Chattanooga city councilman addresses concerns about food deserts

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — At Tuesday’s city council meeting in Chattanooga, one woman said she has a hard time getting food due to what she described as a food desert in the Brainerd area.

I could not get to Food City by bus because CARTA does not service East Ridge. To get to Publix or Whole Foods, I would have to walk and catch two buses just to get to either store, said Brianna Williams.

According to the National Library of Medicine, “the term ‘food deserts’ describes neighborhoods and communities that have limited access to affordable and nutritious foods.”

Councilman Dennis Clark, who represents Chattanooga’s 5th district, said he has several ideas on how to address the situation…
