‘No way to predict’: The 1990 TN Super Fog disaster

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — On the morning of Dec. 11, 1990, nearly 100 vehicles were plunged into nothingness in one of the biggest traffic crashes in Tennessee history.

The 1990 Interstate 75 fog disaster happened on a section of I-75 near Calhoun, Tennessee, amid dense fog, which obscured the visibility for at least 99 vehicles. The series of multi-vehicle collisions resulted in 12 deaths and 42 injuries.

The chain-reaction crashes happened within 10-mile stretch in Bradley and McMinn counties where fog is typical. It is located within two valleys between two ridges and divided by the Hiwassee River.
