DALTON, Ga. — A grieving family says their fight is far from over after a judge dismissed criminal charges against 5 people tied to a teenager’s death inside a Dalton youth detention center.
Attorneys representing the family of 16-year-old Alexis Sluder released a new statement Wednesday, calling the decision “devastating” and vowing to continue pursuing accountability in civil court.
“The family of Alexis Sluder is devastated by the dismissal of the criminal indictments in her case,” the statement says. “Officers at the Dalton Regional Youth Detention Center knew that this 16-year-old girl had ingested toxic substances and was exhibiting clear signs of a medical emergency. Yet instead of taking the most basic, life-saving step—calling 911—they stood by and watched as Alexis lay on the floor in agony for hours.”…
