Backlash grows as Norfolk imposes 7 p.m. curfew on Lafayette Park

Amid pop-up parties and parking chaos, some park users call the curfew a lazy fix that punishes everyone for the actions of a few.

When the City of Norfolk shortened Lafayette Park’s hours to 7 p.m. last Friday, it said the change was meant to keep the park safe, family-friendly and supportive of the nearby Virginia Zoo.

The restriction cuts off public access to the park even as sundown – the usual closing time – stretches past 8 p.m. at the start of summer. Residents have raised questions about the policy change and who it sidelines…
