Portsmouth offers cooling centers during dangerous heat

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Dangerous heat hits Hampton Roads on Thursday with heat indices surpassing 100 degrees.

2026 has already been a busy year for emergency rooms due to heat-related illnesses.

According to the Virginia Department of Health, from May 1 to June 7, there were 525 emergency visits for heat-related illnesses. VDH says that it is higher than the team’s average of 381 visits each year…
