Teen accused of killing landscaper was traveling 90 mph, court docs say

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A teen was driving in excess of 90 mph when his car collided with another vehicle and then struck and killed a nearby landscaper in Great Bridge last month, according to a criminal complaint.

Synclair Tyrone Mayes, 19, charged last week with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Guadalupe Rivera, 60, was also seen by witnesses “weaving and/or swerving through through traffic” prior to the crash May 29.

The impact at Johnstown Road and Britwell Drive was so severe that the motor of one of vehicles was thrown 30 feet into a nearby yard.

A detective wrote that Mayes operated his car, which was a black Cadillac ATS, “with a reckless disregard for human life.”

Investigators were able to determine Mayes’ speed by recovering data from the airbag control module on the Cadillac. At the point of impact, the Cadillac was traveling at a “high speed, erratic manner” in a 35 mph limit zone…
