Woman sentenced to 20 years for deadly 2023 Virginia Beach shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Virginia Beach woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to a deadly shooting in 2023.

Police say that on the night of Oct. 7, 2023, officers responded to a report of a shooting at the intersection of Indian River Road and Lynnhaven Parkway. When officers arrived, they found Eldon Valery suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head. Valery was taken to the hospital, where he died on Oct. 30.

Valery was shot by his romantic partner, 37-year-old Kristin Barber. Valery had been driving while Barber was in the front passenger seat and a child was in the back seat. Prosecutors said the couple had been arguing throughout the day and at one point during the car ride, Valery received a phone call, and Barber went to answer it.
