Virginia Beach School Board rescinds previous decision on Chromebooks, passes new policy

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Virginia Beach School Board on Tuesday changed course on the school system’s policy on technology use for the youngest learners for the upcoming school year.

The board previously adopted a new policy on June 8. The policy they adopted that night would eliminate Chromebook usage by pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. First-grade classrooms would have 10 devices per classroom. Students in second grade would continue to receive one-to-one Chromebooks but would be prohibited from taking them home. Meanwhile, students in grades 3-5 would have one-to-one devices and could take them home.

However, some board members said just days later that they wanted to revisit the policy, and the motion to rescind the vote was placed on the June 23 agenda…
