CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — More than 1,000 women are now part of a lawsuit against Chesapeake Regional Medical Center in Chesapeake Circuit Court after their attorneys say it allowed convicted former OBGYN Javaid Perwaiz to carry out unnecessary procedures and treatments “with the authority, privileges and support” of the hospital, generating substantial medical billing revenue for the hospital and related entities.”
Lawsuit against Chesapeake Regional Medical Center grows to 907 plaintiffs
It is said to be one of the largest medical abuse cases in American history. Perwaiz was found guilty in November 2020 of 52 counts of health care fraud and was sentenced in May 2021 to 59 years in prison.

The filing of 133 plaintiffs Thursday brings the total number of women in the litigation to 1,040. The complaints content that Chesapeake Regional Medical Center facilitated involuntary sterilizations, hysterectomies and cancer treatments administered to women who did not have cancer.

Attorneys Victoria Wickman and Anthony DiPietro now represent 1,023 former patients, each seeking $10 million in damages from the hospital, along with systemic reforms to prevent similar abuses from ever happening again.
The civil litigation follows the medical center’s indictment by the U.S. Department of Justice for conspiracy to defraud the United States and healthcare fraud.
The cases have been filed as multiple-claimant litigation in six actions: Alexander et al. v. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, Abram et al. v. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, Babcock et al. v. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, Argust et al. v. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, Ahmann et al. v. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, and Adams et al v. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center.
