Virginia Zoo announces death of male binturong

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Officials with the Virginia Zoo announced a male binturong passed away on June 8.

Tasik, 25, was experiencing a rapid and significant decline in his health. After careful evaluation, animal care and veterinary teams determined that the most humane and compassionate option was to euthanize him.

A male binturong typically lives up to 18 years, and Tasik exceeded the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) median life expectancy.

Tasik was born at the Singapore Zoo in 2001 and later came to the Virginia Zoo in 2015. Officials said he could often be found lounging high up in his habitat on the poles or in his little huts snoozing the daylight away in true nocturnal fashion…
